A Transactional Apology offers a display of repentance in exchange for something of tangible value. I will apologize if you give me something that I want. In other words, in order to win a public acknowledgment of your forgiveness, which may or may not be sincere, I will pay you.
A perfect example of a Transactional Apology was when Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant apologized to a woman who had accused him of rape. On the eve of his criminal trial, his accuser decided not to testify. Bryant released a statement that read:
